PhD Symposium 2019
Following the success of previous intensive PhD Symposia in Sydney (2013), Gold Coast (2015), and Adelaide (2017), an interactive 2.5 day SOAC PhD Symposium (including an ECR workshop) will run prior to the SOAC 2019 Conference in Perth.
The PhD Symposium invites doctoral candidates working on any aspect of urban research to share and develop their ideas and research skills. The Symposium will be structured around intensive study modules in small groups, together with plenary sessions and presentations from both senior and early career academic mentors.
PhD candidates will be divided into small groups based on research interests, and assigned both a senior and early career mentor. Each student will be given the opportunity to present on their PhD research, with a chance for discussion and feedback from the mentors and other students in the group. Over two days, participants will have mentor guidance where they will workshop their own research and the research of other PhDs, and attend plenary and panel sessions that will focus on current challenges in urban research fields, and issues related to research methodology (including data gathering and analysis techniques), publication, and dissemination. On the final afternoon of the PhD Symposium attendees will be joined by Early Career Researcher (ECR) colleagues.
The PhD Symposium will be held at Curtin Law School, conveniently located in the heart of Perth City. Attendance for the symposium is free of charge, however capacity is limited. Participants will need to finance their travel and accommodation costs.
